Brownies: Looks Like Shit, Taste Like Heaven

So I thought I’d start with something simple that everyone but the pickiest eaters will like. And there’s no better a crowd-pleaser than chocolate brownies. This particular recipe is called Bloomin’ Brilliant Brownies by Jamie Oliver, and as I was typing it out I giggled a little imagining the Naked Chef blubber and spit while he pronounces the B’s and R’s.

But everytime I look at this picture it reminds me of a funny story of how I accidentally made a racist comment about my friends. This couple, Prash and Badiana who I use to live with were sorta like my official taste-testers (or culinary guinea pigs) but they eventually moved out. So I posted the above picture on Facebook with the description: “Looks like shit but taste like heaven” and tagged the both of them.

To which Badiana replied:

Bajahahhahahahahha why are Prash and I tagged as chocolate brownies that you captioned looks like shit but tastes like a dream. Are you implying something about us? Lmao…. Brendon we might be in a fight hahahahahahjahah

Did I mention that Badiana is Haitian-American and Prash is Indian?

Ah Facebook, how your well-intentioned features complicate our social lives. We had a good laugh over it though. But seriously, brownies do look like crap. I mean take a look at this, it looks more like something that’s been left too long on the grill rather than out of the oven.

One thing to note about this recipe, it is extremely sweet and chocolaty. The first time I tried it it felt like a grenade of cocoa and sugar exploded in my mouth. So if you’re like me and don’t like it too sweet you should reduce some of the ingredients. Myself I only used one cup of sugar and 150g of dark chocolate (that’s about 1.5 bars).

Also very important is the cooling process after coming out of the oven. Unlike most cakes brownies are moist and crumble easily if not allowed to cool properly. I learned this the hard way…
